Merchant navy personals are mostly at sea and with out any ARMS even in piracy area and can fight with pirates and terrorist with out any ammunition.
In merchant any nationality can join and shipping company, but mostly national companies only allow their nationals to work, but in some cases they allow expatriates also.
While naval forces personals go to sea for practice or to fight with enemy and always equipped with most modern arms and ammunition.
In navy mostly only nationals are allowed for top secrecy purpose

This is a really good summary, thank you. I don’t know a lot about any of this and I am having trouble deciding between the two. I suppose one question that I have that I’m very curious to know is whether there’s a path to join the U.S. Navy if you go into Merchant Marines (for Americans). If you have any knowledge about this it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

In reply to Md.Mahbubul Alam. @Md. Mahabubul: If I understand correctly, you meant if a person serving sea time in defense navy will be counted for merchant navy? In India, The sea time will be counted if performed on foreign going trading vessels or coastal trading vessels of 3000 GT and above engaged on voyages of 500 miles or more.
